Afraid of losing your job? Don’t be…
It is a scary time right now and many people have either lost their job or their business. This is a very daunting situation because we have no control over it. I will challenge all of you to not be afraid of it.
Here are some things we can do to combat the fear -
Create a plan B - There are no rules that say you cannot have a plan B or a second career. As long as you review your company's policies and inform your manager, you should be able to start another career that can help you plan for your future. Just make sure it doesn’t conflict with your current job or company. I have started a second career as a Career Coach and I feel that it is something that I can do alongside my current job. They even complement each other as I can use my learnings as a coach to assist my colleagues.
Never stop learning - There has never been a greater time to learn anything you want—from learning a new language to learning how to start your own business. There are many courses online and some are even free. All you have to do is google free online courses and you will see many reputable choices. I have even seen courses from top universities such as Harvard and Yale. Coursera and Udemy are two sites you can check out to learn more about the courses they are offering.
Be creative - During this challenging time, I have seen or heard about so many people who have created new businesses. There are always going to be opportunities that come out of challenges. People are making designer masks, creating businesses to deliver meals, online exercise classes, and many more ideas.
Be optimistic - In these times, it is easy to get scared or feel uneasy about the future. We can’t let this get to us and even if the worst happens, we will figure it out. I think if I were to lose my job right now what would I do. I can’t answer that because I don’t know, but I do know that I can’t spend my days worrying about it. I can think about all the things I can do right now to help my family and others as much as possible.
The one thing we have right now is time. We can use it wisely to help ourselves and others overcome the challenges. Whether you are thinking of starting your own business or volunteering to help others in need, these are things that you can focus on right now rather than being fearful of the future.
I know there are days that you won’t feel like doing anything. I have those days too. I have to really push myself to turn that thinking around. Of course, you should enjoy a day of doing nothing. Watching old movies or Netflix is one of my favorite pastimes! It helps to alleviate stress and forget about the world for a moment.
Whatever you decide to do, don't let fear get the best of you. Every day will bring new challenges or new opportunities. It is up to us to determine how we respond to them. We can give up or we can do something to help ourselves.
