Working from home works for most! Here’s why…
As we go into our 2nd month of working from home, most employees are adapting quite well to this new environment and some may even be enjoying it.
Here’s why it is working for most:
No Commute - For those of us who travel over an hour to get to the office, working from home not only saves time, but it allows us to sleep a little later, work out before logging in or relax with a cup of coffee before beginning our day.
Technology - allows you to be anywhere you need to be and also show your face too! Most of my meetings with colleagues are done via Zoom which allows you to do face to face meetings very easily. It allows you to stay connected to your team without being in person.
Family time - I have never spent more time with my family than I have during this time. We have time now for dinners and we can also spend a few minutes during the day to say hello! My dog has never been walked so much before that his head is spinning.
Productivity is up because you aren’t disturbed during the day with a talkative colleague or constant interruptions. For me, I like being able to log on before the day starts so I can answer emails or follow up on tasks that have been outstanding.
I know during this time it has been challenging for a lot of people. For parents who have young children and are balancing their careers, it definitely isn’t easy. If you are in this situation, I would suggest your speak with your manager to see how you can have a flexible schedule - perhaps you can work early mornings and late afternoons so you can watch your children in between.
Whatever your situation is now, working from home has never been easier and it shouldn’t be frowned upon as it was in the past. When I was managing large teams, I always gave the flexibility to work from home as a small perk for employees that doesn’t cost the firm anything. It allows employees to spend more time with their family and maybe even be more productive than when they are in the office.
When life goes back to normal, I have a feeling that most companies will view working from home in a different light than ever before. Virtual meetings are the new norm and will bring us further into the digitization of businesses for the future!
