Don’t let rejection stop you from doing what you love. Here’s how..

Have you ever gone for a position that you knew you would be perfect for but didn’t get? We have all been there at some point in our lives. It hurts especially when we feel we deserved the position.

Unfortunately, life isn’t always fair. You can feel bad, but don’t let yourself stay there for too long. There are steps you can take to change your mindset.

Here are some things I have done to change my mindset after being rejected from a position:

  • Analyze why you didn’t get the position- maybe you weren’t the best person for the job and that’s ok. Or maybe you were the right person but the hiring manager wanted someone else. You should ask the hiring manager for the feedback so you can understand why the decision was made.

  • Learn-after you get the feedback which you may or may not agree with, think about how you may be able to develop your skills. There are now many online certification programs you can take. I am currently taking a leadership course from Wharton. It is so insightful and I’m learning things I never thought about before. I wish I had taken this many years ago. I highly recommend you look into one of these courses today. Some companies also offer tuition reimbursement. Take them up on this as this is a benefit to you and your company.

  • Prioritize yourself - Learning new skills is one way to do that, but there other ways to do this. When I say prioritize yourself, I mean to put yourself first when it comes to your career. Think about what you really want to do. It’s not what others want you to do. Write down what your vision is for your future. You may find out you didn’t even want that job you went for because you want to be in a different role.

We are all unique having different strengths and opportunities. Don’t think because you didn’t get the job or you didn’t get that promotion that you are not good enough. You are good enough and you will get the job you are passionate about in your own time.

When you focus on your goals and vision, it helps you understand where you can be impactful and that may be where you are now. Think about how can you can do what you’re passionate about now even in your current position.

Don’t wait until you find the perfect job to do what makes you happy. Do it now and in time you will find the role that you deserve.

Here’s to your success!

Best,

Rene
